WELCOME

Data Mining has blossomed into a fertile field of opportunities for our students in the Data Mining Track as well as for professional statisticians willing to cultivate new terrain.  This perspective equates to greening of finances for those harvesting the benefits.  However, data mining is "green" in another sense. Data mining is the ultimate eco-friendly statistical methodology.  Think of data mining as a recycling program: analyzing historical, observational data in lieu of manufacturing new data.  Sifting through the data heap can often reap dividends.  For example, direct mailing campaigns that recognize increased sales through reduced mailing volume should garner some carbon credits, as well.  While the ROI of data mining projects is critical, let us not forget the hidden contributions from the green technology!

Green is a tertiary benefit for data mining while financial gain is the key driver in implementing data mining and realizing the benefits.  The rate of growth of data generation runs unabated.  Faculty in the department and student interns working with our sponsors continue to examine increasingly massive data bases:

Customer transactions in the insurance and hospitality industries

Bank loans with an increasing focus on foreclosures

Data on natural disasters including hurricanes; ongoing data collection on lightning strikes

Constructing analytical data bases to relate crop yields to weather

Telecommunication network operations

Claim and life style database with an increasing interest on prevention care

Engineering knowledge database with increasing demand on integrating technologies through multiple disciplines

The Data Mining Lab of the University of Central Florida (UCF), Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and SAS have once again joined forces to present an annual symposium on Business Intelligence.  Professionals from a variety of industries including health care, hospitality, entertainment, information technology and services as well as education are invited to join us to share experiences in applying emerging data mining methodologies to solve challenging business problems.

The Data Mining Program is pleased to participate in hosting this symposium with our sponsors in the spirit of sharing recent advances and successful applications of data mining.  The forum provides a further opportunity to showcase our students who are examining employment possibilities.
